How to remove late payments from your credit report.
A single 30-day late can cost 60–100 points on a strong file, and a pattern of lates can block a mortgage or rental for two years. Accurate lates stay for seven years — but a surprising number are reported with the wrong date, the wrong severity, a duplicate tradeline, or by a furnisher who cannot verify them. Those can be removed.
- It was never actually late — a payment posted on time, an autopay failure the lender caused, a disputed billing error.
- It is reported inaccurately — wrong date, wrong severity (60-day instead of 30-day), wrong balance, or on a closed or paid account that should show current.
- The same late is reported twice, or by a debt buyer and the original creditor.
- The furnisher cannot verify the late payment within the 30-day investigation window required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
- It is older than seven years from the original delinquency date.
- Reviews all three reports and identifies every late payment that is inaccurate, unverifiable, duplicated or past its reporting date.
- Prepares factual, item-specific disputes to each bureau and, where appropriate, directly to the furnisher — never template letters.
- Prepares goodwill-adjustment requests for accurate but isolated lates on accounts with otherwise good history.
- Tracks every response and re-disputes with documentation when a bureau 'verifies' something that is wrong.
- You have the legal right to dispute any item directly with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion at no cost, online or by mail.
- Keep paying on time: a late payment's effect fades every month it ages, and 12 clean months matter to most lenders.
- Lower credit-card balances below 30% of their limits to recover points while lates age off.
Questions, answered honestly.
How long do late payments stay on your credit report?
Seven years from the date of the original delinquency, whether or not the account is later paid or closed. After that they must be removed automatically.
Can an accurate late payment be removed?
Not by dispute — accurate, verifiable information cannot legally be removed. Some creditors grant a goodwill adjustment for an isolated late on a long, otherwise clean account; it is a courtesy, not a right.
Does paying a late payment remove it?
No. Paying brings the account current but the late-payment history stays. Only inaccurate or unverifiable lates can be removed through disputes.
