How to remove collections from your credit report.
Collection accounts are the items that most often block apartment, auto and mortgage approvals — and the items most often reported wrong. Debt buyers frequently report inflated balances, wrong dates, duplicate accounts and debts they cannot document. Under the FCRA and the FDCPA you can make them prove it. We do that work item by item.
- The collector cannot validate the debt or verify the account to the credit bureaus within 30 days.
- The balance, dates or account number are wrong, or the original delinquency date has been illegally re-aged.
- The same debt appears twice (original creditor and collector, or two collectors).
- It is a paid medical collection, or a medical collection under $500 — the bureaus removed these from reports in 2022–2023.
- It is more than seven years past the original delinquency, or it is not yours (mixed file or identity theft).
- Pulls every collection from all three reports and checks balances, dates and ownership against your records.
- Sends debt-validation requests to collectors and factual disputes to each bureau.
- Flags accounts where paying first would help (some mortgage lenders) versus hurt (resetting activity on an old account).
- Negotiates pay-for-delete or settlement in writing when an accurate collection is blocking a specific approval.
- Dispute directly with each bureau for free — the law gives you that right and we tell every client so.
- Request validation in writing within 30 days of a collector's first contact.
- Pull your free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and check all three; collections often appear on only one or two.
Questions, answered honestly.
Do paid collections still hurt your credit?
Under older FICO models, yes — a paid collection stays for seven years. Newer models (FICO 9, FICO 10, VantageScore 3 and 4) ignore paid collections, and all medical collections under $500 were removed from credit reports in 2023.
Can a collection agency remove a collection if I pay?
Some agree to 'pay for delete' in writing. It is not required by law and large debt buyers often refuse, but it is worth negotiating when a specific approval depends on it.
How long does a collection stay on your credit report?
Seven years from the original delinquency with the original creditor — not from when the collector bought the debt. Collectors who report a newer date are re-aging, which is illegal and grounds for removal.
